The Story

Protect your vessel’s underwater components with the Galvanic Isolator VDI-16A, a robust 16 AMP waterproof potted isolator designed to prevent electrolytic corrosion by blocking harmful DC currents from shore power connections.

Key Features

  • Maximum Current Rating: 16 AMP
  • Waterproof Construction: Potted design for enhanced durability
  • Anti-Corrosion Protection: Prevents electrolytic corrosion of hull, propeller, and other underwater metals
  • High-Quality Components: Equipped with dual diodes for reliable performance
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Suitable for 120V to 230V shore power connections

How It Works

The Galvanic Isolator VDI-16A effectively blocks low-voltage DC currents that can enter your boat through the shore power earth wire. These unwanted DC currents are a common cause of electrolytic corrosion, affecting vital underwater metals such as the hull, propeller, and shaft.

Internally, the isolator features two diodes connected in an anti-parallel configuration. This setup allows current to flow in both directions only when the voltage exceeds approximately 1.4 Vdc, effectively preventing the conduction of harmful galvanic currents under normal conditions.

In the event of a higher error voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes permit current flow, triggering the residual-current device to interrupt the circuit and safeguard your vessel’s electrical systems.

Installation Instructions

  1. Locate the shore power connection on your boat, typically between 120V and 230V.
  2. Install the Galvanic Isolator VDI-16A directly behind the shore power connection.
  3. Ensure all connections are secure and protected from moisture.
  4. Verify the installation by checking the isolator’s functionality with a multimeter.
